How to Keep Your Dog Entertained While Home Alone
A bored dog will find ways to entertain itself. Sometimes, they can be destructive. Like chewing on shoes, eating books, or other things. You already know that it is important to give your dog a good amount of exercise and leave enough food and water, and clean up any items that could be dangerous for them to get into before you leave. It’s also important to keep them entertained when they are home alone. Here are some things you can do to keep your pup past the time while you are out and about.
Create a Safe Space
Leave your dog in a part of the house where they feel comfortable and happy and most importantly, away from anything that can be hazardous to them. Consider blocking off part of the house to prevent them from getting into areas they should not be in - like the kitchen. Make sure they have access to their bed, crate, toys, and water bowl for when they are thirsty. They will thank you for it.
Fill a toy with treats
Who doesn’t love toys? Rubber toys filled with frozen treats are an excellent way to keep your pup entertained. I usually fill a Kong toy with kibble and sealed the ends with peanut butter and freeze it overnight. I give it to my dog in the morning right before I leave the house. The Kong Company website also has a bunch of recipes to fill your Kong to maximize your dog’s enjoyment.
Television for Dogs
Does your dog get anxious when you prepare to leave the house? There are channels on YouTube that contain content to help keep your dog calm. The Relax Your Dog, Calm Your Dog, and Relate My Dog channels have programming your pup will love. Flip on the television and stream one of these clips for your dog to watch while you are out. Also, consider playing while you are kicking back and relaxing at home with your dog.
Puzzles
In addition to physical exercise, dogs also need mental stimulation. Treat-dispensing toys offer your dog a reward after completing a challenge. Whether it is a wobbly toy or a treat maze, leave something for your dog to tackle while you are out.
Scavenger Hunts
If your dog is like mine, she will have a blast sniffing out treats hidden around the house. I usually break up pieces of dried treats and hide them throughout the house for my dog to find. It is one of his favourite activities. He gets to put his nose to work and go all over the house looking for some treats to nibble on.
